As a new Mal owner, I'd like to submit the following for your page (which I think is a great one, btw): We recently adopted our 100 lb. Mal, Kodiak (or "Kodi") from the Animal Orphanage in nearby Voorhees, NJ. We were told he was found as a stray, and were puzzled that he wasn't missed by his owner. Of course, since Malamutes can easily travel huge distances, he could have come from several hundred miles away. We were second in line for him, but the other person never showed (he suffered a seizure in the shelter and all the other "interesteds" dropped out). Since having him home, he has displayed two strong Mal traits: On Day Two, just as I was leaving for work, he bee-lined out the door and through the neighborhood. He apparently thought I was playing a game with him because he waited for me to get fairly close before bolting away, tail wagging. After nearly getting hit by a car (he has no "road sense") and traveling almost a mile, he finally spotted a man loading up the backseat of his car and simply jumped in. After many apologies (the man was laughing, fortunately), I walked him back to the main street and was met by my wife for the ride home. Since then, we're very careful about open doors and leashing him, and we take him for lots of rides in the truck, which he loves. The other thing is, of course, fun with foods from the counter, tables, etc. Came home yesterday to find half a small bag of jellybeans gone, plus a couple of peanut-butter cakes. He's helped himself to milk, juice, pizza, cake, ice cream and other items which happened to be within range. We've learned what places he can't reach, and everything tasty not in cupboard or fridge goes there. And he's very "polite" when we're eating, not a beggar. Lastly, he's had not a lot of housebreaking. We think he's either been kenneled or outdoors, and he's picked one spot in our family room that he will use if we allow him into that room. But he's learning. He's good with our cats (although they don't like him), excellent with kids, handles very well on a leash, doesn't pig out on dry food, has a wonderful personality and is extremely intelligent.
